Opel today announced that Timo Scheider will complete its 2004 driver lineup. The 25 year-old German has driven for Opel in the DTM since 2000 and finished eighth in last year's standings, the second best Opel driver after Peter Dumbreck. Scheider was on his way to his maiden DTM victory at Zandvoort in 2003, leading from pole, when a loose wheel after a pit stop left him stranded at the side of the track. However, his performance for the season was good enough for Opel to sign him on again.

The manufacturer has been trying out new talent behind the wheel in winter testing and Scheider continuing with the team was uncertain. Now he is secure for 2004 he is naturally pleased: "The extension of my contract with Opel wasn't self-evident," he said. "Therefore, I am all the more happy that it has worked out and that I will be able to race again for Opel this season."
Opel motorsport boss Volker Strycek commented: "Now that we have finalised our driver line-up, we have finished an important phase in preparation for the coming season. The current team is certainly the strongest ever to have competed for Opel in touring car racing. Now, our priority is finalising the new Opel Vectra GTS V8, our race car for the coming DTM-season. Development is running very well, everything is going as planned."
Scheider was part of the victorious Opel squad at the N?rburgring 24 hours last year. Testing for this year's event starts next week at Estoril, where new Opel driver Marcel F?ssler begins training for his first try at the 2004 race, held in June. The Opel DTM squad is completed by Peter Dumbreck, Manuel Reuter, 2002 DTM champion Laurent Aiello and former F1 driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
