Three Mercedes-Benz Drivers Fight for the Championship

Prior to the ninth and penultimate round of the 2003 DTM at Zandvoort, Netherlands this weekend, the championship is still wide open. Bernd Schneider (Vodafone AMG-Mercedes) leads the drivers’ ranking with 57 points, followed by team mate Christijan Albers (ExpressService AMG-Mercedes) with 54.

Marcel Fässler (AMG-Mercedes) is third with 48 points. A maximum of 20 points can still be scored by one driver. Defending champion Laurent Aiello (Abt-Audi TT-R) with 37 points has only a theoretical chance for the title win.

Close fight: The three Mercedes-Benz driver on top of the drivers’ ranking are almost as close as possible. In the last four races, Schneider and Albers scored 28 points each. Fässler, who achieved his first win of the season at Austria’s A1-Ring ten days ago, scored 27 points.

In the year’s first four races Schneider collected 29 and Albers 26 points. Fässler made only 21 points during this period, due to a stop-and-go penalty in the EuroSpeedway race which prevented him from scoring in this event. Albers achieved three victories so far this year, followed by Schneider with two wins and Fässler with one. The other two victories went to Jean Alesi (AMG-Mercedes) and Aiello.

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

"The fight for the DTM Championship two races from the end of the season is still wide open and as exciting as in Formula One. Bernd Schneider has a chance to win the title at Zandvoort, however, Christijan Albers with a gap of three points behind and Marcel Fässler with nine points behind will do everything possible to delay the championship decision to the final race at Hockenheim on 5 October."

Christijan Albers:

"I expect a huge crowd of Dutch DTM fans to attend the Zandvoort race, who will certainly support me in my home race. I will do everything I can to keep the title fight open until Hockenheim."
