Marcel Fässler on the First Row
Second fastest qualifyer behind Laurent Aiello - Twelve cars within 1.077sec

Marcel Fässler (Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes) will start tomorrow's ninth and penultimate round of the 2002 DTM at Zandvoort, Netherlands, from the first row of the grid. In Saturday's Qualifying, Marcel was second fastest with a time of 1:37.282, behind championship leader Laurent Aiello (Abt-Audi TT) with a 1:36.960. Bernd Schneider (Vodafone AMG-Mercedes), the only other championship contender, qualified seventh fastest with a 1:37,559 ahead of Uwe Alzen (Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes) with a 1:37,665. The first twelve cars four Abt-Audi TT, four Mercedes-Benz CLK-DTM and four Opel Astra V8 Coupé were within 1.077sec.

Due to heavy rain in the morning the surface lacked grip and moreover it was slippery due to dirt and oil on the 4.3-kilometre track of Zandvoort, located in the dunes at the North Sea shore.

Marcel Fässler, Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes, second (1:37.282):

"On the slippery surface today it was important, to drive without fault. This I managed only on my third attempt after a few mistakes during my first two runs."

Bernd Schneider, Vodafone AMG-Mercedes, seventh (1:37.559):

"Today we tried everything, but we didn't manage to set up the car as well as yesterday and I never found my rhythm. Therefore I have to be satisfied with my seventh position on the grid. Hopefully I will be able to make up some places tomorrow, then we will see what is possible."

Uwe Alzen, Warsteiner AMG-Mercedes, eighth (1:37.665):

"Qualifying wasn't bad. We had to adjust the car's set-up a bit during the session, because yesterday's set-up wasn't quite suitable for the dry track. Unfortunately on my final run which was my fastest yellow flags were shown and my time was cancelled. Without that incident and with less traffic on the track, fourth position would have been possible."

Jean Alesi, AMG-Mercedes, twelfth (1:38.037): "This was a difficult Qualifying for me. Due to the heavy rain this morning I wasn't able to evaluate a good set-up for Qualifying, therefore I had oversteer throughout. Unfortunately my fastest lap was cancelled due to yellow flags."

Stefan Mücke, Service 24 h AMG-Mercedes, 13th (1:38.103): "I'm happy to be the fastest driver with a 2001 model. This is my best Qualifying result this year. First I didn't expect to be so fast, because in Free Practice and also at the beginning of Qualifying I encountered some problems. But then I had a perfect lap with a good set of tyres, and the modifications to the car brought the result we wanted."

Bernd Mayländer, Oase AMG-Mercedes, 14th (1:38.105): "I'm satisfied to be the second fastest Mercedes driver with a 2001 model and I'm really glad for Stefan that he's the fastest. Zandvoort is a challenging track where you need a lot of downforce. We knew before that it would be difficult with the 2001 car, but if I finish the race without problems a top-ten result will be possible."

Thomas Jäger, Original-Teile AMG-Mercedes, 17th (1:38.371): On my final run I made a mistake under braking which was a shame as my sector times so far had been really good. In the end, when the times improved, I couldn't go out anymore."

Patrick Huisman, CEB AMG-Mercedes, 18th (1:38.464): We lost a session yesterday due to an electronic problem and we missed the experience today. On my first two runs I pushed too hard and almost ran off the track losing a lot of time. In the end I had to abort my final run due to the yellow flags."

Christijan Albers, Service 24 h AMG-Mercedes, 19th (1:38.570): "I was really fast on my final run, but the time was cancelled because of the yellow flags. I'll try to do my best in Sunday's race to perform well in front of my home crowd."

Peter Dumbreck, Original-Teile AMG-Mercedes, 20th (1:38.649): "I achieved my best Qualifying time on my second run, and I aborted my third run after a mistake. Therefore I had two laps left to improve my time, but I wasn't able to make use of them because two cars went off the track. Therefore I had only two timed laps which is not enough to qualify better than I did."
