QUAIFE PLEASED WITH HUNGARORING PACE

Kent-based racing driver Phil Quaife was pleased with his pace in the Hungaroring 1000kms at the weekend even though he and CRS Racing co-driver Pierre Ehret didn't get the result they deserved in their GT2 class Ferrari F430.

Quaife, Ehret and the team performed well throughout the race and seemed destined for a strong finish in the six-hour Le Mans Series event until Ehret suffered contact with an LMP2 prototype and was forced to pit with a holed radiator. Although the team did a sterling job in making repairs, 40 minutes was lost and they had to settle for 12th place at the chequered flag.

Despite the result, Quaife was able to draw on the positives from a fine weekend which saw him show his outright pace in the hugely-competitive GT2 class.

Starting from 12th in the day/night race after a frustrating qualifying, Quaife was in fine form during his opening stint and had climbed to sixth after only a handful of laps. He then kept pace with the front runners until handing over to Ehret after one hour 25 minutes of running.

Ehret kept the #90 Ferrari in contention during his stint and Quaife then produced another fine drive to leave the team pushing the top five after around four hours of the race.

Unfortunately, just 30 minutes into Ehret's second stint, the German driver suffered the contact. He immediately returned to the pits where a damaged radiator ended the team's hopes of a strong result.

After the mechanics replaced the front radiator, Quaife did rejoin the track for the closing stages, albeit many laps down, and shadowed the sister CRS Racing Ferrari of Andrew Kirkaldy and Tim Mullen, which finished a superb second in class, to the finish.

Phil Quaife: "We haven't got the result we deserved this weekend, but overall I am really encouraged by how it went. Pierre and the team did a great job and I was really pleased with my stints in the car as I showed good pace throughout.

"I made a really good start to the race and enjoyed my first stint. The second was bit manic to begin with as I rejoined behind the Safety Car and, as soon as the race went green, I was fighting the other GT2 cars for position at the same time as all the prototype cars were lapping.

"It's a shame that the contact ruined our race in the end, but there are lots of positives to take from this race. I'm also really pleased for Andrew, Tim and the team for their second place finish which they thoroughly deserve."

Quaife returns to action next month for the final round of the Le Mans Series at his home track Silverstone for the Autosport 1000kms.
