6th Rank for Pierre Ehret in Turkey
The season start of the Le Mans Endurance Series was held at Istanbul Park in Turkey on 07th to 09th April. Pierre Ehret managed position six in the GT2 category though rainy and cold conditions made driving difficult.
Together with his teammate Dominik Farnbacher Pierre Ehret started on a Porsche 996 GT3 RSR prepared by Farnbacher Racing. The three free practice sessions went off without a hitch. Only the second session was a bit problematic due to wrong braking pads.
Unfortunately one could not keep the good practice result of a third rank up to the qualifying. With technical problems the team ended up on position twelve. Qualifying proved the dominance of the Panoz and Ferrari. "Everything has to work 100% properly. Otherwise we'll be chanceless", so Ehret. And the owner of the "Flamingo Resort Hotel" (Santa Rosa/California) should be right indeed. Due to the cold weather the team had to deal with tyre problems, since the rubber simply was wrong delivered and in its mixture too hard. Moreover the race distance was reduced to four instead of six hours because the organiser missed it to order enough fuel for all teams. "A longer race distance would have been a lot better for us", stated Ehret.
In the 15 cars comprising grid of the GT2 category Dominik Farnbacher chose the wrong tyre type by deciding for intermediates, hoping for a slowly drying track. But the circuit dried sooner than expected and slicks were the right choice. The team lost ground and had to take another pitstop.
Pierre Ehret's turn was without problems. He kept his opponents behind and improved position after position. But all efforts could not undo the problems in the forefront. "If the race had been longer we would have had more time to correct the problems", explained teammanager Horst Farnbacher.
All told there was only one lap missing in order to take the step on podium. A fact which surely would have been possible, according to Ehret.
For the second race of the Le Mans Endurance Series at Spa-Francorchamps (12th-14th May) Ehret hopes for better circumstances.
