SPYKER SQUADRON MONZA 1000KM RACE REPORT
Spyker Squadron entered one C8 Spyder in today's Le Mans Series (LMS) race. The 1000km of Monza, Italy, is the first in this year's six round Le Mans Series the first five rounds will be organized in Europe and, for the first time, the series features a race at Interlagos, Brasil. Unfortunately the race finished early for Spyker Squadron today a little after four hours in the race the Spyker C8 Spyder GT2R came to hold on the straight between Ascari and Curva Parabolica.
The 1000km race started at 13:00 in sunny and warm conditions and the C8 Spyder, driven by Dutchman Peter Kox and Czech Jarek Janis, managed to defend their 11th qualifying position with the rolling start. Jarek's first stint was a bit shorter than planned a safety car led the field of almost 50 cars 40 minutes into the race as one of the Aston Martin's spun and was towed behind safety barriers.
Jarek Janis: "My first stint was pretty good, I had a few nice fights with our sister car, the Speedy Racing Team Spyker but I also had a little collision with one of the Panozes".
Just before two o'clock Jarek came in for a regular stop and Peter took over.45 minutes later, with the car running in ninth position and just after he completed his first stop, he called the team over the radio that he was returning to the pitbox with a punctured tire. The well-trained squad quickly replaced the tires and Peter rejoined the field. On his new set of Dunlop tires Kox proofed that the car worked well with the fresh tires and he was able to set the C8's quickest laptime in the race.
At 20 minutes to five he called the team again with another punctured rear left tire and safely returned to the pitbox. Again the team quickly replaced the tires and Jarek took over from Peter to stop only minutes after five o'clock. The driveshaft was broken and the car could not continue it's way to the pitbox.
Peter Kox: "I was quite happy with the car the team put on the grid today the guys worked hard on the setup and both handling and grip of the C8 Spyder were just right. Especially in my last stint the car performed really well. It is very sad that we suffered from two punctured tires in a single race today one could say that this is typically Monza but I have been racing here for more than ten years and never punctured two tires in a race".
Peter van Erp: "If would not have to come in to replace the punctured tires today, our maximum result would have been a fifth- to seventh position. The car is good but we knew in advance that it would be a tough race for us the famous Monza track is well known for its long straights and the key to success here at the `National Autodromo' is top speed. Our engine lacks some power compared with the Ferrari and Porsche factory teams and has been identified as the main area of improvement. Valencia will most certainly fit us better".
The next Le Mans Series round is the 1000km of Valencia, Spain 4 to 6 May.
