SPYKER SQUADRON RETIRES FROM NUERBURGRING 1000 KM
Nuerburg, 1 July In 2005 Spyker claimed the second position in class while last year the team managed to finish third in class. This year unfortunately, the team could not repeat last year's success; due to an oil leakage the number 85 Spyker C8 Spyder GT2R was engulfed in flames and stopped in the first corner whilst running in sixth position.
The third round of the six-round Le Mans Series championship started this morning at 11:55 exactly; local environmental laws required the organizers to finish the six-hour race before six o'clock. Jarek Janis (CZ) started the race from a twelfth position in the GT2 class and immediately had a good fight for position with one of the Panozes.
As Jarek had some difficulty to find the right level of grip, he came in a bit early to change the tire compound. At the same time Peter Kox (NL) took over and with the new tires lap times improved. Peter completed his stint without any problems and handed the wheel back to Jarek around the two-hour mark. The car was running in a seventh position and lap times were competitive.
When running in sixth place an alarm went off. At that time Jarek drove on the straight of the track. He managed to quickly stop the car in the first corner and immediately got himself out of the car as the engine compartment was filled with flames. Initially only one marshal with a relatively small fire extinguisher tried to fight the fire. Eventually it took the marshals some time to get the fire under control.
At first sight the damage to the C8 Spyder seems to be significant. The team will further investigate the damage once it has returned to the Spyker workshop at the factory in Zeewolde. The next race for Spyker Squadron will be the fourth round in the six-round Le Mans Series championship; the '1000 km of Spa' mid- August.
The C8 Spyder of Swiss Spyker privateer team Speedy Racing did not experience any problems and with a good strategy they could join the fight for a podium postion in the front of the field. Eventually the Swiss car finished fifth in class. The team started from a thirteenth position on the grid but the drivers, Jonny Kane (GBR), Andrea Chiesa (SUI) and Andrea Belicchi (ITA), fought themselves to the front of the field and finished behind two Porsches and two Ferraris
