Convers Team announces Turner as third driver
The Convers Team is delighted to announce that British driver Darren Turner will join Christophe Bouchut and Alexey Vasiliev for the final round of the Le Mans Endurance Series in Istanbul, Turkey, on November 12/13. Turner, who drove the Cirtek-managed Aston Martin DBR9 at the Nurburgring 1000kms in September and scored the Russian-entered team's first ever GT1 class win in the international series, will drive the Ferrari 550 Maranello with his French and Russian co-drivers.
Turner's inclusion in the line-up has added strength to the team, which is firmly in contention to win the GT1 class title. Bouchut and Vasiliev are currently a single point behind BMS Scuderia Italia driver Matteo Cressoni in the drivers' standings, and the Convers Team trails their Italian rivals by a similar amount in the team's classification. The second BMS Ferrari is third, a further point adrift, while the Czech MenX team is fourth, and four points behind the leader.
"Darren has proved to be a good omen for the team having brought us our first win in the series in September," said Cirtek team owner Rob Schirle. "He is a fast, reliable driver who has experience of the Ferrari and I have no doubt he will help our cause enormously.
"We have already raced the car at the Istanbul circuit in the FIA GT Championship and gathered valuable information regarding the base set-up. However, the Czech Ferrari team have done the same thing, and we cannot discount the BMS outfit which has been getting stronger all year."
Turner was looking forward to driving the Ferrari again, having raced a 550 Maranello in the 2004 Le Mans 24-hours, sharing with Colin McRae and Rickard Rydell. "I am looking forward to it," said the British driver. "There is a lot at stake that weekend which adds a little bit of excitement to it. There is everything to play for and I hope that the other two come away with the title - that would be a nice finish to my season too. It will be good to get back into the Ferrari and see what it can do, and I am really looking forward to learning the circuit!"
The Convers Team has finished on the podium at every one of the four rounds held thus far. Bouchut and Vasiliev were second at Spa in April, third at Monza and second at Silverstone in their Ferrari. Marc Goossens and Turner debuted the team's Aston Martin at Silverstone, finishing fourth, and Turner went on to win at the Nurburgring, sharing with Robert Bell.
