David Wall set to represent Australia in Malaysian Endurance Race
New South Welshman David Wall is aiming to continue Australia's winning ways this weekend at the 2008 Petronas Primax 3 Merdeka Millennium Endurance, (MME) in Malaysia.
The 12-hour race at the Sepang Circuit, home of the Malaysia Formula 1 race, will attract a field of over 70 cars including some of Asia's top drivers.
David will team up with fellow Carrera Cup Australia competitor and best mate, Barton Mawer ,and Damien Fleck -- making it an 'All Australian' team.
The team will be competing in the open class at the MME in the Porsche 996-RSR that David campaigned in the 06/07 GT Championship and are aiming for a top 10 finish.
Regular Carrera Cup front-runner, David is keen to match his most recent endurance performance this weekend.
"I am hopeful that I will be able to replicate my performance in the Bathurst 12-hour race held earlier this year. We got pole position and came home in 5th place outright," said David.
"Barton and I have a break of more than seven weeks between rounds in the Carrera Cup Australia, so the timing of this race in Sepang is ideal.
"I am really excited about racing in the Merdeka Millennium Endurance; to have the opportunity to compete in such a prestigious international event will be a fantastic learning experience.
"Racing against some of the best endurance drivers in Asia will push us, but we are aiming for a top ten finish.
"A 12-hour endurance race requires a very different approach to the sprint races that are the norm in the Carrera Cup series in Australia so it will be a very different challenge but we have a strong team and I know we can meet the challenge.
David's co-driver Barton Mawer is looking forward to racing with David after spending much of this year fighting for places with him in Carrera Cup.
"David and I spend a lot of time together both on and off the track; we work well together and understand each other's driving styles, I think this will be an advantage," said Barton.
"I know we can be competitive so when David asked if I wanted to join him and Damien I jumped at the chance.
"I have raced on a number of the world's best circuits including Monza, Spa and Silverstone during my time racing in Formula 3 overseas and I am looking forward to the challenges this circuit will bring us."
The cars hit the track for the first practice sessions on Thursday afternoon, with qualifying held on Friday. The race is set to start at 11.45am (local Malaysian time) on Saturday, finishing late on Saturday night.
