Spa EF Open: Vaidyanathan misses out on victory after contact

Ameya Vaidyanathan missed out on a victory in the second EuroFormula Open race at Spa after being hit by Carlin teammate Devlin de Francesco.

Vaidyanathan made a blistering start from third on the grid to blast past Jannes Fitse at La Source, before reeling in polesitter Nikita Troitskiy to take the lead of the race.

While Vaidyanathan was able to break away from the pack initially, he soon came under pressure from de Francesco, who had carved his way up the field.

On Lap 3, the Englishman tried to pass Vaidyanathan at Les Combes, forcing the Indian into a spin and down to fourth in the timesheets.

Despite losing the lead, the 20-year-old quickly turned around his car and repassed Troitisky the following lap to put himself back in a podium spot.

Over the next few laps he built a buffer for himself, but a late safety car deployment made him vulnerable to Campos Racing’s Thiago Vivacqua, who passed him at Le Combes to drop him back to fourth place.

Had Vaidyanathan avoided the collision with de Francesco in the beginning, he could have scored his second consecutive victory in EF Open.

Ninth for Reddy

Meanwhile, EF Open rookie Tarun Reddy continued to get onto the grips with Dallara F312 in the second round of the season.

Reddy managed to vault past Alex Karkosik at the start to move up to eighth, but dropped back one position behind Petru Florescu on the final lap.

The British F3 graduate had attempted to pass Fittje down the Kemmel Straight, but instead ended up going straight through the next corner, Le Combes.

While Reddy managed to get ahead of the Englishman, he had to give back the position, making him vulnerable to Florescu, who sealed the move by the end of the lap.
