Spa EF Open: Vaidyanathan takes maiden win in Race 1

Carlin’s Ameya Vaidyanathan became the first Indian to win a EuroFormula Open race at Spa Francorchamps on Saturday.

Vaidyanathan had a difficult debut season in EF Open last year, managing a best result of sixth in the final round.

This year, however, has been a different story so far with the Indian finishing on the podium in the opening round.

In the first race of the Spa weekend, Vaidyanathan made a slow getaway from second on the grid, but was able to follow polesitter Harrison Scott on the run up to Eau Rouge.

On the third lap, the 18-year-old blasted past the Englishman around the outside of Les Combes to take the lead of the race.

Once at front, he was able to control the field and eventually take the victory by a comfortable margin of 2.479s.

Scott, meanwhile, fell into the clutches of Devlin de Francesco in the second of the third Carlins, but managed to fend off the Canadian to hold on to the runner-up spot.

Nikita Triotskiy was next up in fourth, while Thiago Vivacqua completed the top five for Campos.

Reddy finishes sixth

Tarun Reddy finished sixth overall and third among the rookies, after passing Campos Racing’s Matheus Iorio.

Reddy had signed up for the series just before the start of the season in Estoril without any testing, meaning he has a significant disadvantage over his rivals in terms of mileage.
