Shortly after 10am the Honda engine fired into life and Giancarlo Fisichella did a single installation lap in the EJ11, driving agressively around the track and sliding slightly on the slippery surface before returning to the pits. Jordan are the only team at Silverstone this week, testing components and the EJ12 for three days.
Twenty minutes later Fisichella was back out, lapping at around 1m 37s. He wasn't pushing too hard and completed two flying laps. Conditions now had become colder and more overcast.
After half an hour the sky started to brighten again and a drier line was gradually appearing. Fisichella did one more cautious installation lap, still in the EJ11, and then at 11:30 came out for a three laps. The car was sliding around a lot, particular in slow corners, as Giancarlo pushed harder on every lap. He came out a few minutes later and again improved his times.
The new EJ12 finally made its first public appearance at 12:15, with Fisichella doing a slow installation lap. The car ran without sponsorship, and sounded very different. The car slowed right down at a couple of points and carefully returned to the pits.
During the remainder of the morning session Fisichella did a further three installation laps in the EJ12, hitting the rev limiter at several points around the circuit, and also doing a few practice starts.
The track was almost dry by the afternoon session and, as the sun came out, Fisichella took to the track driving the EJ11 and was immediately four seconds faster than the morning session. He was pushing very hard all round the circuit but driving cleanly and within his limits. He improved consistantly over 5 laps and recorded a fastest time of 1m 26.03.
Half an hour later the EJ12 was back, this time running faster than before and there was no sign of the rev limiter. Fisichella did a fast installation lap. Over the next hour the car did an installation lap every fifteen minutes, with the team checking over the car and gathering data after each run.
Finally at 3.45pm the EJ12 completed its first flying lap, timed at 1m 28.19, just over two seconds slower than the fastest EJ11 time set on a warmer track. Fisichella improved on the next lap, despite backing off noticably at Club and Brooklands. The car returned to the track a few minutes later and improved by a further 0.7 seconds, and seemed extremely fast through the faster corners but a little slow through the Luffield complex.
Unfortuantely poor light brought the session to a premature end shortly after 4pm. However in just three laps Jordan proved that their 2002 car is almost as fast as their 2001 contender straight out of the box. The sessions continue on Wednesday and Thursday.
