Alonso stays on top as rain hits Silverstone F1 test

Fernando Alonso topped the first day of Formula 1's second in-season test for McLaren, as afternoon rain at Silverstone ensured nobody was able to better his time from the morning session.

Spots of rain started to fall just before the resumption of testing at 13:30 local time, which meant few cars ventured out of the pits until the second hour of running.

In the end, most teams made at least some use of the wet-weather running, which was briefly interrupted by a red flag when a wooden pole fell from the lighting gantry onto the track along the start/finish straight.

That proved to be the only stoppage during an otherwise uneventful day, despite the arrival of more rain in the final hour.

The timesheets at the end of the day were identical to how they looked at the conclusion of the morning session, with Alonso finishing up 1.533s ahead of Mercedes driver Esteban Ocon.

As per the morning, Ocon was the most productive driver of the day overall on 123 laps, 18 clear of Alonso, but it was the Spaniard who completed the most laps during the afternoon, adding 61 to his tally.

Alex Lynn stayed third for Williams, three seconds down on Alonso and only just ahead of Charles Leclerc, who made just two installation laps in his Ferrari all afternoon.

Nikita Mazepin stayed fifth in the Force India, despite not venturing out at all during the afternoon. Pascal Wehrlein, who was performing tyre work for Pirelli in the 2014 Mercedes, was the only other driver not to turn a single lap after the lunch break.

Carlos Sainz was sixth quickest, the Toro Rosso man ending the day as the third most productive driver on 91 laps, ahead of Santino Ferrucci (Haas), Wehrlein, Rio Haryanto (Manor), Sergey Sirotkin (Renault) and Pierre Gasly (Red Bull).

Having done only seven laps in the morning, Gasly was the most industrious driver of anyone bar Alonso in the afternoon, boosting his final tally to 52 - leaving Leclerc (18) and Mazepin (35) as the only drivers to fail to breach the 40-lap mark.
