Andre Lotterer to make F1 debut at Spa - Expected to be confirmed in coming days

Some surprising news has emerged from reliable sources today. Andre Lotterer could be getting his chance to race in Formula One this weekend, taking the wheel of one of Caterham's CT05, ousting Kamui Kobayashi from his seat.

Yes, this would not simply be a few laps in practice, he will actually take part in the race.

Lotterer is widely considered one of the most talented racers outside of Formula One, having taken the overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in three of the last four years.

The former WEC champion is German born, but his mother is of Belgian descent, so a debut in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps would certainly make sense.

Lotterer has a connection to the Caterham team through Colin Kolles, who fielded the Audi R10 TDI that Lotterer piloted in his Le Mans debut back in 2009. Colin Kolles is now involved in the Caterham F1 Team, as Motorsport.com has previously reported.

Lotterer, now 32, was a test driver for Jaguar way back in 2002, but he never got the chance to show his skills on a race weekend.

He would need to acquire a Super Licence, which he qualifies for via his runner-up finish in the 2013 Super Formula Championship. He would also need permission from both Audi and his Super Formula team in order to take part in the GP.

If Lotterer does indeed race at Spa, it will mark the first in-season driver change in Formula One this year.
