Bahrain International Circuit on schedule for March 7 inspection

Bahrain 12.01.04 Work on the Bahrain International Circuit, venue for the inaugural Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, is ahead of schedule prior to the circuit's FIA inspection date of March 7th .

The brand new circuit to the south of capital city Manama is 89% completed according to the construction team's schedule. Work has been in operation around the clock prior to the Grand Prix on April 4th . The state-of-the-art circuit is expected to become the benchmark design for future Formula One tracks.

Recent visits by Formula One drivers Jenson Button and Ralf Schumacher have raised the profile of the construction work and the latest to visit the circuit was Irish team owner Eddie Jordan. Jordan's visit to the circuit this week was by invitation of His Highness the Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and came at a critical point in the life of the new track.

"I am amazed, breathless actually. The circuit exceeds words, said Jordan before he flew back to London. "I was tremendously impressed with the work that everyone in Bahrain has done in building this magnificent circuit."

The first layer of the 5.410 kilometre (3.362 mile) track has now been laid and engineers are beginning work on the second and third layers. Run-off areas, gravel traps, safety barriers, marshal posts, control facilities and the medical centre are all in the final stages of preparation. The completed track will be ready for Formula One cars at the end of February, prior to the FIA circuit inspection that takes place in March.

04.04.04 will be a significant date in the history of sporting achievement in the Middle East. The Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix will be the first round of the FIA Formula One World Championship held in the region. A crowd of 100,000 people is expected over the three-day event.
