At the German Grand Prix the stewards asked BAR to remove a 'software controlled device' from the front of the spare car, and the team's appeal against the decision will be heard next week. The device allowed better cornering through torque transfer but the stewards decided it was not permissible.

The device was used on the spare car in the Friday practice sessions at Hockenheim and it was 'bought to the attention' of the stewards. BAR claimed the part conformed to regulations and the team would seek clarification of the matter.

Technical director Geoff Willis said at the time that the device in question was a development part and the interpretation of a certain regulation in regard to its use was a point of debate. The International Court of Appeal session will take place in Paris on August 9th.

"Motor Sports Association (the National Sporting Authority for the UK): Appeal on behalf of licence-holder British American Racing GP Ltd against decision N°16 made by the Stewards of the Meeting on July 24, 2004," said a statement from the FIA.

"The appeal concerns an "electro hydraulic software controlled device which connects the front wheels via drive shafts and allows controlled torque transfer from a faster wheel to a slower wheel even under braking" on the T car of the team."
