Jordan wins five more points in Belgium

The Benson and Hedges Jordan team came away from the Belgian Grand Prix with a further five points to boost its World Championship fight. Frentzen held his qualifying positions to finish third, his fifth podium finish of the season. Hill made a bad start but was able to fight back to win a point with a sixth place finish, his second consecutive points scoring race. Today's result takes the total number of World Championship points scored by Jordan since entering Formula One in 1991 to 202 points.

"Both drivers did a good job today," said Eddie Jordan. "The race was a lot less eventful or exciting than last year's but we did what we came here to do - collect another podium and put both cars in the top six, so we are very happy."

The McLarens once again were in a league of their own. David Coulthard won the race, having beaten his team mate off the start into the first corner. Hakkinen then decided not to race against Coulthard, believing that it was more important for both McLarens to finish and win valuable points for their fight against Ferrari.

Frentzen put on a good show behind the McLarens. "I am very happy with today's result," he said. "It was a great race for Jordan, although perhaps not so exciting for the specators. The team did a great job and our points today help Jordan in our aim to finish third in the Constructors' Championship. The only disappointment is that I lost a place to David Coulthard in the Drivers' Championship. But I am looking forward to trying to beat the McLarens in Monza where I believe we can be very strong."

Damon Hill made a bad start to the race but managed to make up enough places to win a point. "Naturally you have high hopes when you start the race on the second row," he said, " but it was not to be. I had too many revs and got too much wheel spin at the start and it was then very difficult to overtake, but our pit stop strategy worked well and I was able to win a point which is the main thing."

The Ferraris had a bad weekend, winning only three points with a fourth place finish by Irvine. Mika Salo finished 7th, protecting Irvine's position from drivers' behind him, a tactic which was not appreciated by Williams' Technical Director, Patrick Head. Head commented, "Unfortunately Ralf fell foul of Ferrari's cynical approach of running a one car team with a blocking tactic to protect Irvine's position. Ferrari has been doing this for the last number of years and I have to say that I very much appreciate the more sporting approach of McLaren in running a two car team."
