Bite-size tech: McLaren MP4-31 rear end test solutions

McLaren is still eager to improve the MP4-31, with parts expected to filter through all the way to the last race.

In Austin the team seems intent on studying the behaviour of the floor, diffuser and engine cover with numerous sensors placed around the rear of the car.

The team appears to have mounted sensors on the upper surface of the diffuser to monitor deflection (see white inset) during Friday's free practice session, which has also led to the use of additional metal supports (arrowed).

These new metal rods supplement the smaller ones already used by the team and tie the floor to the crash structure, helping to manage rigidity.

Meanwhile, what appear to be small cameras have been mounted on the rear suspension (upper image, red inset) and look across at the last section of the engine cover.

Here we find that the team has fitted a mesh to the surface of the bodywork which is likely being used to enhance the fidelity of the images and give multiple reference points for the team to work with.

The work being conducted here might not all have a bearing on this year's car but you can be certain that these tests are being conducted in order to better understand this year's car and help to improve the MP4-32 before it's even turned a wheel.
