The Red Bull driver was forced to brake much earlier than usual during the session after suffering two different issues.
As a result of the problems, Ricciardo missed the cut to go into Q3 and qualified down in 14th.
"We ran into some issues under braking in Q2," said Ricciardo, who will drop 10 places on the grid due to an engine change.
"I know what I felt. It will take a while to see what happened.
"I think it's two separate issues, but one was I think there was an offset between left and right with the temperature of the brakes.
"And then there was some other stuff going on. I don't know if it was engine braking related or downshift but I couldn't pull up the car.
"So a couple of separate issues both under braking, which hurt us.
"A bit of a shame that it happened during qualy, but as long as we get it sorted for tomorrow we'll try to make a better race."
Getting confidence back
The Australian, who has struggled with his car's handing under braking, says he has gone back to a similar set-up approach to what he used in 2014 in order to get his confidence back.
"We've changed the car quite a lot since Canada to try to get it a bit back to what we had last year," he said.
"We came into this year with a new car and new ways to try to be quicker, but there's probably still some unknowns about where we are going with the set-up.
"We've gone to something more conventional like what we ran in 2014 just to try to get some feeling back under braking."
