Tiago Monteiro motivated to finish his 'home' Grand Prix

The weekend had developed well for the Portuguese driver who recorded a fifteenth position in the second timed session on Friday with a time of 1.14.468. In the Saturday morning practice the time came down to 1.13.832. But Tiago could not record a qualifying result as he hit a curb on turn 8 and that was the end of the qualifying for him.

Tiago comments: "This Brazil Grand Prix is very important for me. Kind of a home Grand Prix, partly because my mom is a Brazilian and that we have the same language in Portugal than here. And also because a number of my sponsors have travelled from Portugal and are visiting for the Grand Prix. So, to be here in Brazil is really like almost competing a home Grand Prix."

"On Friday morning we did not do much more than an installation lap. In the second session, in the afternoon, I was ranking ahead of the team's third driver Venezuelian Ernesto Viso and my team-mate Christijian. Overall, the grip level were quite low after the torrential rains on Thursday. But the track was getting better and better. This was encouraging, and in terms of tires we are hoping for a warmer weather for the race on Sunday."

"So with the team's engineers we worked well trying to anticipate the circuit changes. Toward the end of the third timed session, I tried to avoid Raikkonen's McLaren which was stopped on the track. Barrichello was behind me. I crossed the line to avoid the McLaren."

"Unfortunately, the stewards of the meeting decided it was a breach of regulation and imposed a penalty of US2,000. It must have been my unlucky day as later, I could not complete Q1. I hit the kerb at turn eight as I was in a fast fifth. I lost the car, but avoided the wall."

"However the anti-stall system did not perform and I could not re-start to finish the lap and the qualifying session. I hope it is not too big a disappointment for my sponsors who have come all the way from Portugal. I will see them later for dinner."

"My motivation is the same tomorrow for a good Grand Prix. We had a good car all week-end. To start in the back here may be an advantage if there is a problem in the first corner. We are now working on the race strategy. The weather should be dry and warmer than today. This is an advantage for our Bridgestone tires."
