While Canada struggles on to save its Grand Prix, it now seems Brazil could be facing troubles as well. According to various reports, a judge has decreed that the contract between Sao Paulo and race organizers be suspended. The government has so far borne the brunt of the costs of the event and Judge Joao Andre de Vincenzo ruled that the GP is a drain on public resources.
The race organizers, who have been threatened with fines if they ignore the ruling, have appealed the decision. Brazil was destined to be the last race on the 2004 calendar, moved from its usual third spot to the end of the season as new races have been introduced.
With the provisional return of Canada to the schedule, there was due to be 18 races next year but it remains to be seen if that will still be the case. It's possible Brazil will be marked as provisional by the FIA until the current situation is resolved -- although there is an alternative to Sao Paulo should F1 want to keep Brazil on the calendar.
The Brazilian GP has previously been held in Rio de Janeiro and there has been speculation for some time that there's a desire to move the race back to Rio. However, the Jacarepagua circuit is due to be part of a reconstruction to provide facilities for the 2007 Panamercian Games, and the intention is to then use those facilities in order for Rio to bid for the 2012 Olympics. The circuit would be unusable for possibly up to two years while the reconstruction work goes on.
