Up to five more new specifications of Bridgestone Formula 1 tyre have been tested during this week's second winter testing session, with contributions on development coming from three teams.
Bridgestone engineers were on hand at Barcelona with Lucky Strike B.A.R. Honda from Tuesday-Thursday, while others remain at Jerez until tomorrow when Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and Sauber Petronas will continue testing at the Spanish circuit.
Hisao Suganuma, Bridgestone's Technical Manager, explained: "We have been trying about eight specifications this week; some have been completely new while some have been tyres we tested last week with which we wanted to do some further work."
"All three of our teams currently testing are following the same tyre test programme, although they may not be testing the same tyres at the same time. For example, if one team tries a specification that doesn't prove competitive enough then we will not ask the others to waste their time by trying it. On the other hand, when we are pleased with the results of a certain specification from one team, we will ask the others to test it as well to confirm the results."
Dry weather has again dominated in Spain this week, with track temperatures in the high 20s. Anthony Davidson and Jacques Villeneuve were testing for Lucky Strike B.A.R. Honda at Barcelona, in addition to 2002 Formula Nippon champion, Ralph Firman, who was offered his first test in a Formula 1 car by the team. At Jerez, Luca Badoer and Nick Heidfeld were in action.
Mr Suganuma added: "We have made good progress again this week and collected some valuable data. The rate of development is working out as we planned and we have been able to try out a number of different options.
"There have been some very quick times in the 1:15s recorded at Barcelona but we are not chasing these qualifying-type lap times at this stage. I am very pleased with our achievements so far."
Next week, Bridgestone's teams will swap circuits, with Lucky Strike B.A.R. Honda moving to Jerez and Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and Sauber Petronas taking over at Barcelona.
