The British driver outpaced the German by just 0.113 seconds to grab his 46th career pole and to move to third in the all-time ranking behind Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna.

Rosberg had been quicker than Hamilton in Sector 1 of his final flyer, but he lost his chances in Sector 2 and had to settle for second, much to the delight of the British public.

The Williams team emerged as Mercedes' closest challenger, with Felipe Massa in third ahead of Valtteri Bottas.

Ferrari had to settle for the third row of the grid, Kimi Raikkonen in front of teammate Sebastian Vettel, both men finishing over a second off pole.

Daniil Kvyat was seventh for Red Bull ahead of the Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz.

Nico Hulkenberg in the Force India and Daniel Ricciardo in the second Red Bull completed the top 10.

Unlike teammate Hulkenberg, Sergio Perez was unable to get the updated Force India in the top 10, the Mexican qualifying in 11th place ahead of the Lotus of Romain Grosjean.

After showing strongly for most of the weekend, Max Verstappen endured a disappointing qualifying, finishing down in 13th position and unhappy with the handling of his Toro Rosso during the session.

"I don't know why, it's just so bad compared to practice," Verstappen said on the radio during Q2. "I don't feel one corner the same. Just no grip."

Pastor Maldonado qualified the second Lotus in 14th position ahead of the Sauber of Marcus Ericsson.

Teammate Felipe Nasr failed to reach Q2 and will start from 16th place.

McLaren faced a race against time to get Fernando Alonso's car ready for qualifying after his problems during final practice, but the Spaniard managed to go out at the start of Q1.

But that did not help the Spanish driver's chances, and both him and teammate Jenson Button were knocked out in Q1 in another poor day by the British team.

The McLaren duo could only outpace the Manors, and Alonso will start from 17th, with Button in 18th.

Will Stevens emerged as the top Manor driver, outqualifying teammate Roberto Merhi by over two seconds.
