Mika Salo 4th quickest in wet second qualifying session

Rain throughout the final qualifying session for Sunday's British Grand Prix ruined Mika Salo's hopes of improving his grid position after being disqualified from the first (dry) qualifying session on Friday. Mika set the fourth quickest time (1 min 48.639 sec) in second qualifying but will have to start the race from the 23rd position on the grid. In the rain, Ukyo set the 14th time (1 min 52.054 sec) but was using and old set of wet tyres from the morning's practice session just to assess conditions. Mika Salo: "Luck was not with me today. Without the rain I would have improved my time a lot, even if I didn't have one! I am sure in the dry I would have been lapping in the low 31 seconds, qualifying around the 11th place. It's a long race and I hope it rains tomorrow, because - despite the spray - it will make my job easier to overtake. If it's dry, it will be harder."

Ukyo Katayama: "We improved the set-up of the cars today, even if we had difficult conditions with the weather. In the second qualifying I used and old set of wet tyres but they suffered with some vibrations."

Harvey Postlethwaite, Managing Director - Engineering: "It's a shame that Mika did not have a chance to run in the dry. He went out straight away to insure he recorded a time and got into the race. They were actually very difficult conditions, half of the track being dry - half wet, and the wet tyres quickly got very worn. We ran both cars at the end of the session to check the balance."

Mr Kimura - Yamaha F1 Project Leader: "Today's result was all dependent on the weather for us and that did not go our way. The main thing was that we have had no problems with the engines over the last two days and we are confident that this will be the case tomorrow."
