Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes AMG F1, 1st position, celebrates

Hamilton struggled at times during practice and qualifying, particularly with his approach to Brooklands, but came within six thousandths of nicking pole with his stunning pace through the last sector. He committed to the one-stopper from the start and executed it brilliantly, with his pace so good he set fastest lap on 32-lap old hards.
VERDICT: Not at his best in qualifying, but on top form on Sunday and given his pace advantage would likely have beaten Bottas regardless of the safety car.
