On his first day of testing this week, Jenson Button set the fastest time of the nine drivers on track at Paul Ricard on Thursday. The BAR man clocked a best of 1:11.047 from 119 laps. Button's teammate Takuma Sato was fourth quickest as the pair continued with a tyre, engine and chassis programme.
Fastest man yesterday, Williams test driver Antonio Pizzonia was second quickest, a couple of tenths down on Button. Team race driver Ralf Schumacher joined the test and was fifth on the time sheet, working on set up, traction control and simulated starts. Pizzonia carried out distance runs and evaluated tyres.
McLaren testers Pedro de la Rosa and Alex Wurz completed the third of a four-day test for the team in third and sixth fastest respectively. Renault test driver Franck Montagny worked on tyre compounds and constructions and was seventh fastest in the R23 chassis. Toyota was the fifth team on track, testers Ricardo Zonta and Ryan Briscoe eighth and ninth.
At Fiorano Ferrari tester Luca Bodoer worked on tyres in the F2003-GA, his best time a 57.398 of 132 laps. Michael Schumacher took over at Mugello, trying out new components in the F2004, and completed 65 laps with a best time of 1:20.106.
