Professor Sid Watkins may have retired from his post as FIA medical delegate but he's not been forgotten. Such is the high regard and affection for Watkins from both fans and those involved in the sport that a campaign is under way to see him honoured with a knighthood for his services to motor racing.
Watkins became the official F1 race doctor in 1978 and spent 26 years in the position, as well as undertaking several other safety related roles until he announced his retirement as medical delegate at the beginning of this year. His deputy Dr. Gary Hartstein was appointed his successor.
Many notable names have signed the on-line petition, which calls for Watkins to be awarded a knighthood "in recognition of his services to Formula One and medicine." Supporters include Flavio Briatore, Frank Williams, Bernie Ecclestone, Adrian Newey and several drivers, amongst others.
