Canada tyre choice gets underway

Canadian driver Jacques Villeneuve and his Lucky Strike B.A.R Honda teammate Olivier Panis joined Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro in the top ten in today's practice session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Michael Schumacher, who has won in Montreal four times, drove the fastest lap on Bridgestone tyres with a 1:15.788. Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished the day in 10th place for OrangeArrows.

Rubens Barrichello was quickest in morning practice followed by Michael Schumacher, the only drivers to post sub-1:17 times on their Bridgestone tyres. Giancarlo Fisichella was third fastest for DHL Jordan Honda in the first session.

Tyre Performance

Hisao Suganuma, technical manager of Bridgestone Motorsport:

"It was a normal Friday practice today with different fuel loads being run. Unfortunately, that makes it difficult for us to see a direct comparison in terms of lap time between the two tyres so some careful consideration of the data from today is required tonight."

The Tyre Choice

Both dry-weather specifications Bridgestone has brought to Montreal are from the soft compound range, one being new for this race while the other has been raced previously this season.

Hisao Suganuma said: "The smooth surface of this track and the nature of the corners means you must use softer compounds to be competitive. While wear is not a problem, the tyre must have good heat durability to cope with the hard braking we see here. All our teams tried both specifications today. The softer of the two clearly has better grip while the other gives better balance between front and rear. It is not clear yet which way some drivers will go so once we have checked the tyres we will make our recommendations."

The Teams

Ross Brawn, technical director of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro:

"A reasonable session in which we focused on race work and the tyre comparison. We got a lot of good information about the two specifications. Michael has a favourite tyre but it was difficult for Rubens to judge. We tried a number of brake configurations with him but he was never really happy with them. Brakes are very important here so we will be looking at that this evening."

Geoff Willis, technical director of Lucky Strike B.A.R Honda:

"We are reasonably happy with the way things went today and considering what we tried I don't think we are too far off. Both drivers tried both tyres. One is fairly clear with one specification while the other driver is not sure."
