The Canadian Grand Prix remains a firm favourite on the Formula One Calendar for both fans and teams alike. The temporary nature of the circuit makes it uneven and changeable, ensuring that the 8th round of the 2002 Formula One World Championship in Montreal will offer a challenging race for the drivers and an entertaining weekend for fans the world over.
Attrition here is high as the circuit provides long straights and tight chicanes, ensuring a high level of braking throughout the lap. With a precious point secured here last year Jaguar Racing will be hoping to continue with the reliability that was evident in Monaco. An exhibition game of street hockey featuring the Jaguar Racing drivers and Canadian Olympic Athletes on Thursday 6th at 10am on St Laurent Street, (Montreal) will start the action off track.
Niki Lauda CEO and Team Principal
Montreal is one of those unusual circuits that you either seem to enjoy and finish or you succumb to one of the many mechanical failures that can occur thanks to the uneven surfaces and dirty track. The concrete walls pose a danger to those that get too close and the number of incidents in recent years' highlight that even experienced drivers can be caught out. I failed to finish here in both '78 and '79 and although the circuit has been modified in recent years I know that it remains a difficult circuit and all drivers will have to have their wits about them if they want to finish."
"I expect to see lap times drop this year as they have shortened the circuit slightly but increased the laps to seventy. Despite my lack of podiums here I do enjoy Montreal and I expect this years race to be no less exciting than those that have gone before."
Eddie Irvine
"After three third finishes here in '95, '98 and '99 I have good memories of Canada and I enjoy racing the circuit. Montreal is one of the more exciting settings for the Grand Prix both on and off the circuit. The track itself tends to break more cars than any of the other circuits. The number of retirements is always high, yet saying that, the team has been working hard on reliability and my aim will be to steer clear of trouble. There have been four first lap collisions in the last five years and even with a reduced field overtaking remains difficult."
"As long as the weather stays dry the race may well be won in the pits. I was pleased to finish in the top ten in Monaco and all things considered I would like to continue the trend of finishing. Off the track I am looking forward to the game of street hockey on Thursday. I suspect that the National League players may prove to be tough competition!"
Pedro de la Rosa
"Canada of course gave me a points finish last year with Jaguar Racing and ideally I would love to be in that position again. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a good circuit for me, I like racing the long straights and despite the fact that the circuit is very bumpy and you are shaken around, it remains a favourite track on the calendar. This circuit really tests the brakes as you are using them throughout the lap and taking the car from 160mph to half of that at least five times. The reliability of the cars will be tested here, as will the skill of the drivers. After my finish in Monaco, I am looking forward to the Canadian Grand Prix, a circuit that promises to entertain."
