Former IndyCar driver and F1 TV presenter James Hinchcliffe believes Carlos Sainz is facing a "defining moment" in his career after joining Williams.
The Spaniard was left looking for a new seat after he was replaced at Ferrari by seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton from 2025. After weighing up multiple options, Sainz ultimately signed with Williams.
The Grove outfit is currently battling against an overweight car. It sits ninth in the constructors' standings with two points, earned by Sainz with a ninth-place finish during the Chinese Grand Prix.
While the team works to resolve its issues, Hinchcliffe argued that Sainz has two options: he could either "wallow in self-pity or buckle down and prove he made the right call."
"I think it's a defining moment in a lot of ways," Hinchcliffe said during an appearance on the F1 Nation podcast.
"Because, well, he's got two options, right? He's got to wallow in self-pity and play the woulda, coulda, shoulda game, or it's the buckle down and I'm gonna prove that I made the right call because teams can turn around.

"And this was never a short-term programme for him. I don't think even with all the faith that everybody had in the vision, and the future, and the plan that James Vowles had at Williams that he'd be fighting for a championship in 2026.
"I don't think that was ever the goal. And so more than anything now, I think he's got to dig in, buckle down, and help this team get to where he believes that they could be and maximise the potential that he saw in them when he signed on in the first place.”
The third round of the 2026 season will take place at the Suzuka Circuit for the Japanese Grand Prix from 27-29 March.
