CHAMPCAR/CART: Villeneuve to make decision within two weeks

Jacques Villeneuve, fresh from three days of testing with Williams- Renault at Silverstone, said that he would decide within two weeks whether he will move to Formula One for 1996 or stay with his current Indycar team.

At a news conference at Silverstone, Villeneuve said that he doesn't want to be in F1 at any cost, but wants to drive for one of the top teams and win races.

After three impressive test days (see separate MNI articles for testing results), FOCA president Bernie Ecclestone said he saw a future World Champion in Villeneuve, and believed that he could provide some stiff competition for the current star of F1, Michael Schumacher.

With Schumacher expected to announce that he will stay with Benetton for 1996 and 1997, Williams is expected to re-sign Hill, but Villeneuve could take the place of David Coulthard for next season. The young Canadian is still expected to test for Ferrari later this year, though, so the 1996 Formula One driver lineups are still far from clear.
