Cristiano da Matta keep his lead at the top of the Jerez testing times today, clocking a fastest of 1:18.991 over 73 laps. The Brazilian focused on set-up preparations for Malaysia and was happy with the day's work.
In a carbon copy of final positions yesterday, Alex Wurz and Pedro de la Rosa were second and forth for McLaren, Marc Gene third for Williams and Takuma Sato fifth for BAR. Wurz ran development parts for the new MP4-18 but de la Rosa had back problems after his first run in the McLaren yesterday.
"I had such a bad seat yesterday that it has really done damage to my back," de la Rosa told Autosport. "I could hardly sleep last night. The team made a new seat for me today based on Alex Wurz's seat and that is much more comfortable, but the damage has been done."
However, the Spaniard was impressed by the McLaren: "I've never, ever experienced this amount of grip in my life before! It's a very, very competitive car. It's a very good team, and it's so good to work with an organisation like that. At the moment it's a one-off thing and I don't know what's going to happen."
Gene continued with developing the FW25 for Williams: "Another clear and dry day which let us work through our testing program," said test team manager Tim Newton.
"Marc was driving the FW25 01 and we worked through a few problems that kept us in the garage more than we would have liked. We did manage to clock up 71 laps and learnt some useful insights. The test included chassis testing and engine work. Tomorrow Ralf will be joining us here in Jerez and we expect a similar forcast."
At Fiorano, Felipe Massa continued work for Ferrari with a tyre test programme in the F2002 chassis. He set a best time of 57.496 over 122 laps.
