Pedro de la Rosa once again topped the times at the week's test session in Jerez, a 1:16.203 for the McLaren test driver and an unofficial lap record. De la Rosa was behind the wheel of the MP4-19 and completed 53 laps until an engine failure cut his day short, while fellow tester Alex Wurz, in the MP4-17D was fifth fastest. Renault's Fernando Alonso was second quickest and team test driver Franck Montagny sixth.

Marc Gené and Juan Pablo Montoya were third and fourth respectively for Williams and the team also tried out Ho-Pin Tung. The 21 year-old was the first Chinese to drive a Formula One car and did 42 laps. "Ho-Pin assisted with our general test programme today, driving the FW24," said chief operations engineer Sam Michael.

"He worked well with the engineering team and demonstrated a good degree of competence and ability over the course of the day. His lap time was very respectable for someone who hadn't driven anything like a Formula One car before today."

The Ferrari pair of Luca Badoer and Rubens Barrichello concluded the Maranello squad's testing week seventh and eighth. Work focused on engine, tyres and electronics and Ferrari also had Luciano Burti in action at Fiorano. Burti ran tyre tests on the short track and his best time was 1:01.391.

Takuma Sato was the best of the two BARs on track at Jerez, ninth quickest in the 005 chassis, and Jenson Button was 14th in the 04 Concept car. Toyota's Cristiano da Matta rounded off the top ten, with teammate Olivier Panis 12th and the pair of Jaguars 11th and 13th, Christian Klien ahead of Mark Webber.

Sauber had test driver Neel Jani completing its test programme. Jani has not had much time behind the wheel of the Sauber but chief race engineer Jacky Eeckelaert said the young Swiss did a professional job. Jani confirmed data gathered earlier in the week on tyres and brakes and was 15th.
