For the second practice of the Spanish Grand Prix it was once again Pedro de la Rosa who was at the top of the times. McLaren's third driver clocked 1:15.062 late in the session, six tenths quicker than he was in the morning. Toyota No.3 Ricardo Zonta was second quickest, over a second down, and Williams' Nick Heidfeld was third.

Track temperature was up to the mid forties at the start of the second session and de la Rosa was quick to put up a time, 1:18.645. He was swiftly demoted by Zonta, 1:17.518, and Sauber's Felipe Massa took third fastest. Massa's teammate Jacques Villeneuve slotted into fourth but was demoted by Red Bull's Tonio Liuzzi.

Tiago Monteiro led Jordan teammate Robert Doornbos in sixth and seventh until Red Bull third driver Christian Klien demoted then when he took sixth. David Coulthard took third and McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen went one better for second. Minardi's Patrick Friesacher and Christijan Albers were 11th and 12th respectively, then Albers improved ahead of Doornbos for 10th.

Klien returned to sixth after being shuffled down and Toyota's Ralf Schumacher made fourth on his first flyer. Raikkonen improved to within half a second of Zonta and the Williams of Nick Heidfeld posted ninth. Giancarlo Fisichella was the first Renault of the day to set a time, fourth, and Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello also had his first timed lap for eighth.

Jarno Trulli managed seventh for Toyota on his first visit of the day to the time sheet and, likewise, Fernando Alonso put his Renault third. Zonta dropped his best time to 1:16.220, over a second up on Raikkonen. Michael Schumacher posted eighth on his first flyer of this session but de la Rosa took the place off him as he worked his way back up the times.

Klien had a brief skirmish into the gravel but recovered to take 11th, and Albers' Minardi came to a halt in the middle sector with a gearbox gremlin. Coulthard went up to second fastest, just under six tenths off Zonta. Fisichella and Trulli improved their times but stayed fourth and seventh respectively and Massa climbed back up the order to ninth.

Liuzzi moved up to 11th and Raikkonen also improved, closing the gap to Zonta to four tenths. There was a lull in track activity half way through, with some minor improvements through the field but not much action. Juan Pablo Montoya put his McLaren in the top ten and Klien was next to stop, also in the middle sector, while Trulli moved up to fourth.

Further down the field Narain Karthikeyan was the lead Jordan in 17th and Albers, who managed to get back into action, was ahead of Friesacher. The Ferraris were having a quiet time, Michael and Barrichello in 12th and 14th respectively. Ralf improved to sixth behind and Villeneuve bettered his own time for 15th.

Heidfeld went up to fourth and Barrichello to 12th, then Nick improved again to third. There were quite a lot of laps being put in but not many changes in the positions. Heidfeld had another go and inched up another spot to second, three tenths off Zonta. De la Rosa was next to move, up to the top slot with a 1:15.062, over a second faster than Zonta.

Montoya was next to have problems in the middle sector. He hit the barriers at turn nine, damaging the McLaren heavily right at the end of the session. He was unharmed but was checked over in the medical centre to see if he had aggravated his just-healed shoulder injury, and was found to be in good shape.

Mark Webber was the only car not to run, due to his engine problems of this morning. He and Heidfeld will have fresh engines tomorrow but Nick will get the 10 place demotion penalty in qualifying as he was on track today.

Overall it was another rather quiet session despite most drivers putting in a fair few laps. Aside from de la Rosa's late fast flyer, the front of the pack were quite close, places two to seven within a second, but there was no real indication of who's on form. Final top eight classification: De la Rosa, Zonta, Heidfeld, Raikkonen, Trulli, Coulthard, Fisichella, R. Schumacher.
