European GP Sauber race notes

Pedro Diniz finished seventh in the Grand Prix of Europe, but unfortunately Mika Salo had to retire with a transmission problem on the 28th lap.

Pedro Diniz:
When you finish seventh you always wish you could have gone one place better to score a point, but I have to be satisfied with seventh today because I was in last place after I spun on lap three. I had just passed Jenson Button, but then I had to brake too late for Turn Six and I went off. In the wet conditions I had a lot of understeer, visibility was really bad and it was hard to overtake, so I was really pleased to catch and pass several of the cars.

Mika Salo:
The car felt good in the dry, but I had oversteer when we refuelled and switched to wet tyres. Despite that I had de la Rosa in sight when I felt something funny at the back end on the 28th lap. Next thing I knew the car spun into the gravel trap, and my race was over. A driveshaft had broken, which was a shame because in these conditions we could have finished well.

Peter Sauber (Team Principal):
Unfortunately Mika retired because of a broken driveshaft, but we saw a strong performance from Pedro. To come from last place to seventh was the maximum we could have expected today, and when driver and team achieve the maximum that they could in a given set of circumstances, you cannot be unhappy.
