Ex-Hulkenberg and Grosjean race engineer joins Aston Martin

Gary Gannon has started working with Aston Martin ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 campaign after leaving the Haas squad where he spent the last 10 seasons

Ex-Haas engineering stalwart Gary Gannon has been signed by Aston Martin ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season, Motorsport.com can reveal.

Gannon left his previous post with Haas at the end of the 2024 F1 campaign – signing off alongside Nico Hulkenberg, for whom he had worked as a race engineer at the American squad since the start of 2023.

Before that, Gannon held the same role for Mick Schumacher during the German’s two-year stint with Haas, with Romain Grosjean his other charge at the same squad after he joined ahead of its first F1 season back in 2015.

Motorsport.com understands that although Gannon began working for Aston this week, it is yet to be confirmed if he will act as race engineer for Lance Stroll or Fernando Alonso in the upcoming campaign.

In 2024, Stroll’s race engineer was Ben Michell, who has worked with the Canadian and son of team owner Lawrence Stroll since 2021, while at times he also had Andrew Vizard in the same role. Alonso was engineered throughout by Chris Cronin.

Cronin previously held the same role with Alonso’s predecessors at the team – Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez (during Aston’s previous guises as Force India and Racing Point).

Gannon’s appointment comes a year ahead of Aston’s switch to Honda power units, when the team will become the Japanese manufacturer’s works partner squad and cease to be a Mercedes customer.

His past experience could then be useful for his new team, as Gannon spent 10 years working as a Honda development engineer in CART and the American Le Mans Series. He also previously worked for the Marussia F1 team before joining Haas.

Gannon’s appointment is the latest change in Aston’s F1 trackside team ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Last week, it was revealed that team CEO Andy Cowell would also be taking up the Aston team principal role, while the former holder of that title for the last three years – Mike Krack – has been moved into its newly created post of chief trackside officer.
