Fangio Ferrari sold for $28 million
A 1956 Ferrari driven by five-time Formula 1 world champion Juan Manuel Fangio was sold for $28 million at an auction on Thursday.
The Ferrari 290 MM, built to contest in the World Sportscar Championship, was part of an RM Sotheby's auction that included a Porsche owned by Janis Joplin and a Pontiac which belonged to Roy Rogers.
Only four 290 MMs were bult by the Italian company, one of them winning the Mille Miglia with Eugenio Castellotti at the wheel in 1956.
Fangio finished fourth in that event.
The following year, the car won the Buenos Aires 1000 km race with Castellotti, Luigi Musso and Masten Gregory behind the wheel.
