Malaysia's Fairuz Fauzy successfully completed a full grand prix race distance in testing at the Spanish circuit of Barcelona today. The 24-year-old notched up a total of 88 laps of the Circuit de Catalunya for the Spyker Formula One Team.
"Everything went according to plan and I'm very pleased with the job that I did. There were absolutely no problems with the car and the team was very happy with what I achieved," said Fairuz.
The Malaysian's second run for Spyker Formula One Team saw him complete 410km of the 4.65km Barcelona circuit on Tuesday. Combined with his test at Valencia last week, Fairuz now has over 700km of experience of Formula One machinery under his belt.
The programme for his Barcelona test saw Fairuz complete an eight lap run, whereupon he came in for a systems check. Afterwards he completed a further three stints of 22 laps -- stopping in the pitlane to refuel and take on a change of Bridgestone tyres. During the runs, Fariuz was testing the driver aids of the Spyker F8-VII which included the traction control and differential settings.
"The most important aspect of the test was to gain as much mileage as possible. It wasn't important to go for the ultimate quick lap time because we were using used and scrubbed rubber," says Fairuz. "But despite that I was getting faster and faster with each stint as the fuel levels came down. The team was very happy with my pace."
With a heavy fuel load and old rubber, Fairuz still managed to lap at a competitive 1m 24.5 seconds, which was just over a second slower than the best time set by Spyker Formula One race driver Christijan Albers.
He continued: "I'm getting more confident and pushing the car to the limits. Each time I go out now I'm getting faster. The Spyker Formula One Team is now gearing up for the first grand prix in Australia and I feel the car's in really good shape and they'll score a good result there."
Following his Barcelona run Fairuz will return to England where he will undergo his seat-fitting for his World Series by Renault campaign. The 24-year-old will race for the Norfolk-based Cram by P1 Europe outfit in 'Macho' sponsored car.
