Fernando Alonso suffers fifth DNF of 2025 after Italian GP suspension failure

Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has been forced to retire from the 2025 Italian Grand Prix after suffering a suspension failure on lap 25.

The Aston Martin encountered a suspension failure on the front right of the car. This is yet another DNF for the Spaniard, who has already retired from three grands prix this season in Australia, China and Monaco, and one sprint race in Miami.

"Suspension failure, this is so unbelievable," Alonso exclaimed over the team radio as he made his way to the pitlane to retire from the race.

"It's the front right [of the car]. Fernando is so disappointed," Sky Sports F1 pitlane reporter Ted Kravitz explained. "He's gone from elation for getting past Gabriel Bortoleto to despair. He's so annoyed and can't wait to get out of the car."

Alonso had qualified in ninth for the race at the historic Monza circuit, and started eighth after Lewis Hamilton's five-place grid penalty was applied.

"We are the slowest car on the straight, so that’s a little bit of a concern for sure, but let’s see what we can do," Alonso explained to the media after qualifying.

"I was thinking to start the race P14 or P16, and the points were probably out of reach. Now maybe we are a little bit slow on the straight, but we start in the points, so the picture has changed in the last hours. I’m a little bit more optimistic for tomorrow."

He added: "Definitely, as we said on Thursday, we are much more confident and positive for the future than any other year at this moment in the season.

"We were a little bit lost. Some of the upgrades were not working, and there were some concerns for the next winter. Now it seems that we can develop the car with some trust in our tools, and that’s probably the biggest goal of 2025. I think we are in the right direction."

Alonso currently sits 12th in the drivers' standings with 30 points.
