Ferrari claims SF16-H has 'innovative' concepts

Ferrari says there are 'innovative' design concepts on its new Formula 1 car, after confirming a short nose and push-rod front suspension have been included as part of its technical overhaul.

The Maranello-based team unveiled its SF16-H with an online launch on Friday, as it confirmed a raft of design changes from last year's challenger.

The most noticeable differences are the shorter nose – which will help improve airflow – as well as the switch to push-rod front suspension.

Chief designer Simone Resta said: "We have something quite different – this [nose] level is higher so the air flows different to last year. That is very important because it has a positive impact on aerodynamics.

"Also, after four years of pull-rod, we have changed and now we have front suspension with push-rod.

"The weight is better and it is a step forwards compared to last year and the previous models.

"Another important part are the sidepods. The radiators are different – and we have tried to take advantage with the cooling systems."

Speaking about the overall concept, which includes a narrower rear end, Resta said: "The project of this car started one year ago and the direction was very, very ambitious. We tried to revisit and review all the parts."

Innovative engine

Ferrari is understood to have made major changes to its power unit configuration for 2016, which includes an overhaul of its engine and tweaks to its energy recovery components.

Matteo Binotto said: "Compared to last season we have worked on two areas. First architecture, so we have tried to compact it in order to have a positive impact on aerodynamics.

"The car is tighter and narrower compared to last year. We tried to move all the accessories.

"But we did not work only on architecture, we tried to improve combustion for example, inlet aspiration and also the turbo.

"This is the first step compared to the past, a step forward, so we have made important technical choices and innovative choices."
