Motorsport Debrief: Ferrari targets Mercedes with big upgrades

Revealed! Ferrari’s major new F1 update package

We all know that Ferrari head honcho Sergio Marchionne wants from his F1 development team this year, and he seems to have got what he wants. Our technical guru, the one and only Giorgio Piola, spied this detailed update package in the Spa pitlane on Thurdsay.

Giorgio’s exclusive photographs show that Ferrari will run a new front suspension – featuring a third damper. It is understood this new configuration was trialled in the post-Hungarian GP test, with the team making the changes in a bid to help better manage its ride-height and rake angle.

As well as the changes to the suspension, Ferrari has made some revisions to its wings and floor too.

Hamilton: Vettel doesn't want to be my teammate

Lewis Hamilton has zero concerns about the possibility of Sebastian Vettel joining him at Mercedes – as he believes that it will simply never happen.

Hamilton is adamant that Mercedes is in a good place at the moment, and that there is no reason for the team not to retain Valtteri Bottas. Asked why he was so sure about Vettel not joining Mercedes, despite the German being available for 2018, Hamilton said: "Umm, stating the obvious. I know he doesn't want to be my teammate.”

Button considering full-time racing return for 2018

Jenson Button will make a full-time return to racing next year, with Japan’s Super GT series emerging as one of the most likely avenues for the 2009 F1 world champion.

Button races in this weekend’s Suzuka 1000Kms GT event for Honda, but remains on the books of McLaren, who has an option to bring him back from retirement should Fernando Alonso decide to move on.

"I will be definitely doing something next year for a full season," the Englishman said. "Whether it's [in Japan] or in America or somewhere else, I don't know yet.

"But the discussions are underway. We'll see how this [Super GT] weekend goes. If it goes well and if I enjoy the weekend, which I think I will, then maybe I could be racing here next year."
