The FIA has released a statement saying that it has looked at the new tyres French manufacturer Michelin has produced in regard to the reinforcement of the tyre width rule, and believes they will comply with that rule. Williams and McLaren met with the FIA recently to discuss the tyre situation as they believe it could be detrimental to their championship hopes. But the decision to measure tyres after use will stand.

Formula One's governing body appears to have side-stepped Ferrari's claim that Michelin has been using illegal tyres and said the matter is now closed.

"During a meeting on Monday with representatives of Michelin and the McLaren and Williams Formula One teams, the FIA were shown examples of a new Michelin tyre before and after use," it said in the statement. "The FIA technical department has confirmed that it believes these tyres will comply with the Formula One regulations if used in the same way at Monza."

"With hindsight, it is regrettable that those using the earlier Michelin front tyres did not consult the FIA about possible excess tread width as soon as they became aware of it. However, as far as the FIA technical department is concerned, the matter is now closed and the Championship can continue with all teams on an equal footing."

The FIA also stated it had not actually changed any rules and the 270 mm width regulation has stood since 1999: "The FIA has never suggested that tread width was unlimited once the tyre was in use."

Despite the concerns of some, Williams chief operations engineer Sam Michael thinks the new Michelin tyres are in fact even better: "The new tyres are quicker and more consistent and therefore a genuine improvement," Michael told the BBC. "I'm happy. It will be a good tyre at all the three final races."
