Following the death of Graham Beveridge a marshal in Sunday's Australian GP, the FIA has revealed safety measures to protect officials and furthermore stated that they were in process before the accident in Australia.
The FIA's director of communications, Francesco Longanesi was quoted as saying: "The FIA had already put forward to the World Motorsport Council, for the session on March 21, the proposal from the circuit and safety commission to raise all the fencing at all the Formula One world championships by one metre. This would not have saved the poor marshal in this instance because the height of the fencing had nothing to do with it, but it shows how not only car safety but also trackside safety is subject to constant study."
In addition he also confirmed that they are looking into the introduction of extra electronic elements into the cars, which would limit the amount of officials required on track during races.
He added: "The fact that the marshals have a certain degree of exposure is due to their function because they're there to signal and to help. If you put a fire marshal completely far away from where an accident may happen and he's in the position where his possible intervention would not be quick enough, it is not worth having him there. The combination of the measures which we have already proposed should at least decrease to a very, very big amount the risk that a trackside marshal has to take."
