Renault continued its strong performance at Barcelona testing on February 16th with Giancarlo Fisichella setting the best time of the 14 drivers on track. The Italian clocked 1:14.408 and teammate Fernando Alonso, who was fastest yesterday, was third on the time sheet. The pair worked on tyres and familiarisation programmes for the new race weekend format this season.

"Overall, things seem very positive: the car is well balanced, the balance remains consistent on long runs and the R25 is looking after its tyres well, which will hopefully mean the drivers are well equipped to continue attacking until the end of the races this year," said Renault chief test engineer Christian Silk.

The Toyota of test driver Ricardo Zonto split the two Renaults in third and Jarno Trulli was also at work for the Cologne-based squad, ninth. Juan Pablo Montoya held station from yesterday in fourth for McLaren and team tester Pedro de la Rosa was 11th. Both worked on durability and calibrating the car for Melbourne.

It was the last time Montoya will drive the car until the season opener. "Today has been a productive day with the focus on the forthcoming Australian Grand Prix," he said. "The next time I will drive MP4-20 will be in Melbourne, my first Grand Prix for Team McLaren Mercedes which I am really looking forward to."

David Coulthard showed good pace for Red Bull in fifth fastest and fellow driver Christian Klien was just a couple of tenths behind in sixth. Mark Webber was the lead Williams, seventh, with Nick Heidfeld a similar couple of tenths behind his teammate in 10th. Both worked on set up and tyres.

Rubens Barrichello headed the two Ferraris on track in eighth and Michael Schumacher was 12th. Both drove an F2004M chassis; Barrichello worked on tyres and set up while Schumacher carried out a race simulation. Jordan rounded off the times with Narain Karthikeyan and Tiago Monteiro in 13th and 14th respectively.

"It was a good day and among other things we spent time updating Tiago's car to EJ15 specification, so he got some runs in the afternoon with the latest specification," said Jordan sporting director Trevor Carlin. "We are making progress all the time and it's going quite positively at the moment."

BAR continued its exclusive session at Valencia with Takuma Sato driving the 007 and Jenson Button piloting the '05 concept car. Sato totalled 57 laps of tyre work, set up and aerodynamics, while Button focused on balance and tyre compounds and completed 97 laps.
