In the aftermath of the British Grand Prix testing got under way on June 13th with Monza being the most popular location. Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella was the fastest man of the day, 1:23.647, and team test driver Heikki Kovalainen was third fastest. Engine development and tyres for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix were their focus.
"Our first day was really satisfying and we already completed the first half of our tyre testing," said chief test engineer Christian Silk. "We noticed interesting results of the new package we would like to use for the Canadian GP. The car worked pretty well and the drivers seemed happy with the testing we completed."
Splitting the two Renaults was the BMW Sauber of Nick Heidfeld, just a thousandth behind Fisichella. He ran a programme of brakes, set up and tyres, as well as rear and front wing aero comparison. Team tester Robert Kubica was fifth on the time sheet and worked on car balance, set up and tyres. Jacques Villeneuve will take over from Kubica on Wednesday.
Nico Rosberg was fourth fastest for Williams and tester Alex Wurz rounded off the times in 10th. "Nico mainly concentrated on both tyre construction and compound tests while Alex started the morning session working on the gearbox before evaluating some aero parts," said test team manager Mike Condliffe. "After lunch, Alex moved on to some suspension development work."
Tester Ricardo Zonta was sixth fastest for Toyota and fellow team tester Olivier Panis was eighth. Honda also utilized its test drivers, Anthony Davidson seventh overall and James Rossiter ninth. Tyres were their focus, although Davidson was sidelined by an engine failure in the morning.
At Silverstone MF1 test driver Fabrizio del Monte and racer Tiago Monteiro kicked off a three-day test. Del Monte shookdown the test chassis and worked on control systems and aerodynamics, then Monteiro took over in the afternoon and worked on tyres, although his programme was disrupted by rain.
