A day in Formula 1

On Thursday this week, three drivers from Formula Renault 3.5 Series - Nathanael Berthon (International Draco Racing), Albert Costa (Epsilon Euskadi) and Sten Pentus (Fortec Motorsport) - plus the leader of Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Kevin Korjus (Koiranen Bros Motorsport), were received by the Renault F1 Team in the context of the Monza Formula 1 Grand Prix. An unforgettable day and full in insights for these drivers whose goal is to move up to F1 in the years to come.

At the initiative of Renault Sport Technologies and Renault F1 Team, three drivers from Formula Renault 3.5 Series and the leader of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 were received by the Renault F1 Team on Thursday, in the heart of paddock at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Nathanael Berthon, Albert Costa, Sten Pentus and Kevin Korjus were initially welcomed to the Renault F1 Team motorhome by Eric Boullier, Renault F1 Team Principal. It was a discovery for them all to find that even at the level of F1, their results are carefully monitored.

After an in-depth tour of the Renault F1 Team garage, the four drivers went over to meet Red Bull Racing's Jaime Alguersuari, who only last season was competing in Formula Renault 3.5 Series.

In the afternoon, Remi Taffin, Engine Operations Manager at Renault F1 Team showed the drivers round the engine department and explained all the functions of an F1 steering wheel, emphasizing the working methods and the different demands that the engineers make on a Formula 1 driver.

Then it was Dr. Riccardo Ceccarelli's turn to receive Nathanael Berthon, Albert Costa, Sten Pentus and Kevin Korjus. With his experience of a total nine F1 teams, and after working with some sixty F1 drivers, the Renault F1 Team doctor stressed the importance of the physical preparation of a Formula 1 driver, at pains to explain the concept of effort management, very different between a sprint race in Formula Renault 3.5 Series and a Formula 1 race.

Before leaving the paddock at Monza, Robert Kubica and Vitaly Petrov were keen to meet the four World Series by Renault drivers. Robert Kubica had a long discussion with his successors, including Albert Costa, driving with Epsilon Euskadi, the team with which the Polish driver won the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2005.

This day at the heart of Formula 1 has of course further boosted the motivation levels of all four drivers invited today by Renault F1 Team, and especially the youngest of them, Kevin Korjus, age 17. "For the first time in my life and I got to see an F1 team from the inside," commented the Estonian at the end of the day. "It's obviously very impressive. We learned a lot today and everyone involved gave us lots of tips and advice on how to succeed in F1. I think I will dream of Formula 1 tonight ... This sort of day only reinforces my motivation to work harder and to one day become a Formula 1 driver myself."
