Arrows Car Gets Shakedown

The Arrows A19 has had its first run. The task fell to Pedro Diniz who gave the car a few laps before sunset last weekend at Silverstone. The A19 features a carbon fibre gearbox casing and a new Hart V10 engine. The badging of the engine is uncertain as the Yamaha engines the team had last year were prepared by John Judd. Yamaha were keen to continue with the Judd engines, Arrows were keen to use the Hart. The car is officially launched later this month, when we will find out about the engine.

Tyrrell Has First Run

The last Tyrrell car has had its shakedown. The Tyrrell 026 is fitted with the Ford V10 which the team described as a big improvement on last year's engine. The 026 ran with the X wings due to the damp weather and the team expect to use the extra wings at high downforce circuits again.

New McLaren Launched

McLaren have finally launched their 1998 challenger. The MP4/13 is expected to build on the success that the team enjoyed last year. Many people have predicted that they will be in with a good chance of a title in '98. Team boss Ron Dennis played all the hype down, saying it was nice that everyone thought they would be back at the top. Adding "our feet are firmly on the ground, but we couldn't have worked any harder on the new car". The car will get its first run in Barcelona next week (Wednesday - weather permitting)

New Premises For Stewart

Stewart GP have started moving into their new building. The new unit is 80,000 sqft and they expect to be in by April.

European Union At It Again

The EU have been voicing concerns over the running of F1 again, these rumblings are almost certainly the sounds of an investigation that is to come. It is possible that any EU investigation into F1 will result in less European races being on the calendar. We'll have to see.

Hakkinen Fastest

Mika Hakkinen led the way at Barcelona yesterday with a best time of 1.22.97. The McLaren car is still a hybrid 97/98 model, though it is running grooved Bridgestone tyres. Fastest 98 spec driver was again Villeneuve with 1.25.09. The afternoon session was abandoned due to rain - coinciding with the arrival of the Arrows car!!

New Engineer For Frentzen

Heinz Harald Frentzen will be engineered by Craig Wilson for the coming season. Wilson joins Williams from Tyrrell.

China Almost Certain For 1999

Bernie Ecclestone has told the South China Morning Post that he is almost certain that Zhuhai will be added to next year's F1 calendar. The Zhuhai circuit was thought to be in with a chance of appearing on this year's calendar following the French/Belgium/Portuguese GPs falling into uncertain status. It now seems that Kyalami will replace Portugal and that the Belgium race may go ahead as planned. The French race is still being fought for by French officials but time is running out.........

McLaren Quickest

The two McLaren drivers set the pace during on Sunday, though they were both in hybrid 97/98 spec cars.

Top five:

M. Hakkinen McLaren Mercedes 1:22.92
D. Coulthard McLaren Mercedes 1:23.43
J. Villeneuve Williams Mecachrome 1:24.82
J. Alesi Sauber Petronas 1:25.37
R. Schumacher Jordan Mugen Honda 1:25.77

Nakano Gets Minardi Seat

Shinji Nakano, the one time Prost driver, has secured his short term F1 career by landing the second seat at Minardi. This just leaves the second Tyrrell drive as the only unfilled position for the 1998 season.

Dream Team Competition

Fancy winning tickets for next year's Monaco GP? Or a bottle of Champagne to spray over your mates? Then get yourself off to the web site and start playing dream team, our Fantasy Formula1 game. The game will run throughout the season, details are on the web site in the Dream Team section.

F1 TV Program Needs Audience

Those of you with easy access to Waterloo station (London) could apply to be part of a studio audience for an upcoming ITV sports show. Details are "A new I.T.V. weekly debate programme called "The Sports Show" which begins on Thursday 19th February '98. Each week our host Eamonn Holmes, plus resident panelist Will Carling will be discussing all the big sports stories of the week with top personalities from the world of sport. I am looking for people to come along and be part of the studio audience. The audience are encouraged to participate throughout the evenings discussions and are invited to fax topics to me in advance that they would like to raise on the show."

F1 A-Z, Where To Find It!

The F1 A-Z series that we ran last year has been collated into a single Acrobat file. It and many others to come can be found in the F1 Merchandise area. Go to the Enigma link and download. The A-Z will be updated a few times a year, added to and an illustrated version is also on the way. These will be announced as and when they are completed.
