Heinz Harald Frentzen has admitted that his intention was to drive for Arrows for 2002 and he was determined to stay in F1 after the collapse of Prost. Frentzen drove for Jordan until mid-season in 2001 when he was abruptly sacked, causing an uproar in the paddock. When Prost went into liquidation at the end of last year, Frentzen looked to be out of a seat for 2002 -- but then the Arrows rumours started. After lengthy speculation the German finally replaced Jos Verstappen at Arrows for this year in a move that has again caused controversy. Many thought that Frentzen's intention was to wait for the court's decision on Prost, as he still wanted to drive for them, but he says that was not a major consideration.
” There was, at most, an indirect connection to the negotiations with Arrows." He commented. "I was determined to stay in F1 and I had intended to drive for Arrows. Basically I'm satisfied. They are very good people, I think a lot of them. Arrows has a promising package, the Cosworth engine runs very well, the basis of the car is okay. It doesn't look bad.”
In his first test session with the team last week Frentzen had a baptism of fire when two rear wing failures caused him to crash heavily, but he is confident the problems can be solved: "The problem can be put down to the new engine partner. The vibration frequencies of the Cosworth V10 are different from those of the Asiatech V10, which led to the wing delaminating at two different points. We now need to modify some components to counteract this harmful incidence which spreads into the whole car."
Arrows are yet to officially announce a launch date for the new A23 but with Cosworth engines this season they are expected to be improved from last year; Frentzen, like any driver, wants to be in the points but is cautious about what he can achieve.
"That's difficult to say at this point." He said." First I'll try and do my homework. It's difficult to make any predictions, even more so because I could hardly watch the other teams. The target however is to score some points.”
