Renault technical director Mike Gascoyne believes that Ferrari decided to run the F2001 at the first races this season as far back as the middle of last year. In 2001 Ferrari took nine wins and eleven pole positions with Michael Schumacher and won the Driver's and Constructors' titles with four races still to go. Gascoyne thinks they planned to use the same car this year after it proved so dominant.
"Ferrari went to great lengths in the technical working group last year to ensure last year's cars could be used this year," he said. "I believe they always had the intention of putting that car out at the start of this season if they could. If you have to switch back to the old car at the last minute because there is a problem with the new car then it could cause a major headache because you have to change everything you are doing. But I don't believe they ever intended to do that. I think they had it in mind from the start."
The decision to use the older car paid off in Australia when Schumacher won the season opener and the speed and reliability were not in doubt when he managed third in Malaysia after being relegated to the back of the field due to stopping for a new nose cone. Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn said that the team only decided to field the new F2002 in Brazil because Williams were so competitive, until then the plan had been to debut the F2002 this weekend at Imola.
