The week's testing started today on three different circuits with the main action at Monza. Williams test driver Marc Gené was the best of the seven drivers present, setting the fastest time of 1:23.203 over 57 laps. Williams also had Ralf Schumacher on duty at Silverstone, who set the best time of 1:22.613.

Test team manager Tim Newton was at Monza: "After a relatively slow start to the session, Marc completed a total of 57 laps ending the day at the top of the time sheets," he said. "The team's main focus was on tyre testing and high speed runs in preparation for next weekend's Canadian Grand Prix. Tomorrow, the team will concentrate on further set up work of the FW25 with Marc driving again."

Chief operations engineer Sam Michael was at Silverstone: "Despite intermittent rain throughout the day, we have had quite a productive session in terms of mileage. We managed to make some progress with the aero testing as well doing some work on the electronics of the car before ending the day with engine endurance running."

BAR had both test drivers on duty at Monza, Anthony Davidson second fastest and Takuma Sato rounding off the times. Davidson was followed by the Sauber of Heinz-Harald Frentzen. The German worked on preparations for the Canadian Grand Prix next weekend, and also for Monza in September, and tested the Petronas B spec engine.

Ferrari tester Felipe Massa was fourth quickest behind the wheel of an F2002 chassis and worked on a Bridgestone tyre programme. Rubens Barrichello was on duty at Fiorano, also testing tyres and set-up in the F2003-GA.

Tester Ricardo Zonta was fifth for Toyota, running aerodynamic and brake tests in preparation for Canada, and Cristiano da Matta was the second driver present at Silverstone with Ralf Schumacher. The Brazilian concentrated on reacquainting himself with the circuit -- having not driven there since 1996 -- and did some aerodynamic work.

Test driver Pedro de la Rosa was the sole McLaren on track at Monza and was sixth fastest in the MP4-17D. Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard start development work with the MP4-18 at Barcelona from tomorrow.
